the city epitomizes the images of the gentile Old South.
While maintaining the beauty
and charm of its historic past, Charleston is a large modern

| Summers
are warm and humid with daily average highs in July of 89
degrees and lows of 71. The period from October through May is
quite pleasant. The January average daily high is 60 degrees
with a daily low of 37. Of the 52 inches of average rainfall
annually, 20 inches falls during the summer. In winter, the city
receives only a trace of snow. However, Charleston does lie in
the Atlantic Coast’s hurricane path.
Tourism is a major industry for
the area which has worked hard to maintain its antebellum
atmosphere. It’s 789 acre historic district has numerous
museums and almost 2,000 carefully restored buildings. Within
minutes from the city center are the grounds of beautiful
Magnolia Plantation with its sprawling romantic gardens
reminiscent of European influence. The 300 year-old ancestral
home of the Drayton family is credited as being America’s
oldest man-made attraction. Nearby Drayton Hall, built between
1738 and 1742, is the only Ashley River plantation house to
survive the Civil War, and is the oldest and finest example of
Georgian and Palladian architecture in America. Middleton Place
has America’s oldest landscape gardens laid out in 1741. The
main house was burned by Sherman’s Army in 1865 but much
remains for the visitor to enjoy today.
There are many golf courses
including several world-class courses such as the four courses
of Kiawah Island. But golf is just one of countless outdoor
activities residents and visitors alike enjoy. Weather is great
for tennis, jogging, biking, and water sports. There are 65
miles of splendid beaches on the Barrier Islands near the city
for swimming and beachcombing and the waters around Charleston
are perfect for surf fishing, crabbing, sailing, or deep-sea
sport fishing.
There are a number of gardens,
parks, and forest sanctuaries for the nature lover or bird
watcher and the history buff will have a seemingly endless
number of places to visit and research. Charleston offers a
multitude of events annually including the Low Country Oyster
Festival, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, the Festival of
Houses, the Spoleto Festival, a Taste of Charleston Fall
Antiques Festival, and Christmas in Charleston. Charleston
Museum, the oldest museum in the United States founded in 1773
is just one of many in the city dedicated to South Carolina’s
history and Charleston’s historic past.
The Dock Street Theatre opened
in 1736 as America’s first building designed solely for
theatrical performances is still in use today. The Gibbes Museum
of Art features one of the finest collections of America’s
paintings in the southeast. The Charleston Symphony Orchestra
offers a nine month schedule of orchestra, pops and classical
concerts. There are several theatre groups, two opera companies,
two ballet companies, and a contemporary dance company as well
as several chamber music groups. The internationally recognized
Spoleto Festival USA is a comprehensive arts festival offering
opera, theatre, ballet, and modern dance in addition to a wide
variety of music including jazz and visual arts held each year
during late may and the first weeks of June. The city is South
Carolina’s cultural Mecca.
Charleston is a haven for
antiques and art. King Street, the city’s traditional shopping
thoroughfare offers countless antique shops and art galleries.
Charleston Place in the historic district is home to many of
America’s favorite shops and, for the different and offbeat,
try the Old City Market where many local craftsmen and artists
display their creations.
Charleston’s lifestyle would
be unlike that found in any other South Carolina city. The sense
of history and culture dominates the lifestyle. For a big city
dweller used to the hustle and bustle and cultural offerings,
this could be an easy transition to make. With its history,
shopping, great restaurants, culture and outdoor activities,
Charleston has much to offer.
